Upper Hutt College is a co-educational, state secondary school north of Wellington city. It is a school with a tradition of excellence in academic achievement, sport, cultural activities as well as the performing arts. We have International students from Europe, Asia and South America.
Upper Hutt College is a New Zealand high school surrounded by nature on the edge of the capital. Regular bus and train services give you easy access to the Wellington city centre 20 minutes away by car. Upper Hutt has a beautiful setting between the crystal clear waters of the Hutt River and tree covered hills. There are many opportunities for recreational, sporting and cultural activities. There is easy access to the harbour and to the beaches of the Wellington area. Upper Hutt College offers you the best of both worlds. You can enjoy the cosmopolitan capital city of Wellington with its cafes, shopping, art galleries and museums and at the same time enjoy being close to nature.
We have brand new buildings and facilities after a $20 million rebuild completed at the end of 2014. There are many sporting and cultural activities. We have fencing at a local club. There are several golf clubs near the school and it is possible to go horse riding in the local area.
Maori culture is strong and celebrated at Upper Hutt College. There is a marae (traditional Maori meeting house) on the school grounds. All students are welcome to join the very active Maori culture group and to learn some traditional Maori song and dance.
Art, Dance, Photography, Drama, Media Studies and Music classes are offered in our new Creative Arts area. Hospitality and Technology classes are offered as well as the traditional academic subjects. Outdoor Education is also a very popular option.

Regular train services give you easy access to the city centre, a scenic trip through the valley and around the harbour, just 35 minutes away by train.
Students have many opportunities to be involved in outdoor education trips at Upper Hutt College.
The Year 12 Adventure (Outdoor) Education course comprises of key themes: Bush, Rock, Mountain. Students will participate in activities including Navigation, Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Adventure based learning, Rafting and High Ropes. Students considering this course should be prepared to engage in theoretical concepts in the classroom that will allow them to increase their ability to pursue adventure in the outdoors.
The Year 13 course builds on the knowledge and skills learnt in Year 12 Adventure Education. Course content includes, kayaking, bush survival skills, river crossing, adventure based learning, tramping, rock climbing and abseiling.
International students also have the option of joining Geography field trips to places such as Tongariro National Park or Rotorua.
During the year and in November during the End of Year Programme for those international students not doing the national NCEA exams students also get the opportunity to go on day trips to such places as Castlepoint Beach, Matiu/Somes Island, Butterfly Creek, walkways above Wellington Harbour, Pukaha Mt Bruce, the Pinnacles in the Wairarapa and to the Kapiti Coast.
Upper Hutt College offers the NCEA (National Certificate in Educational Achievement) qualification at all levels. German students regularly stay in order to gain University Entrance in New Zealand in order to enter universities back in Germany. A wide range of subjects are available which include Dance, Music, Media Studies, Photography and Art as well as more traditional academic subjects. The school is also strong in a variety of Physical Education Courses including Physical Education itself, Sports Performance and Community Sports Leadership.
The school and local clubs offer up to 30 sports and numerous cultural activities for the students to participate in. Sports include fencing, horse riding, athletics, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, roller skating, touch rugby, volleyball, as well as dance groups, drama productions and music groups. Individual music tuition is available.
