Upper Hutt College
Welcome to Upper Hutt College. Our college is co-educational for both boys and girls with 950 students. We are a school with a proud tradition of academic achievement and sporting and cultural excellence. The other important aspect of Upper Hutt College is we work very closely with our host families to ensure you are housed in a loving and welcoming family environment.
Our location is unique in Wellington as we are surrounded by nature, on the edge of the capital city of New Zealand. There are many opportunities for outdoor activities in the local area from hiking and golf, to horse riding and mountain biking. Regular bus and train services, or a 20 minute car journey, provide easy access to the coolest capital city in the world. You can enjoy the busy cosmopolitan life of Wellington with its shopping, cafes, art galleries and museums, walk around the beautiful harbour area or relax on one of the many beaches.
We offer a safe, supportive and caring environment for our international students, ensuring they feel included and an integral part of our school culture. Our school is well-equipped for modern teaching and learning, with brand new buildings and facilities after a $22 million rebuild in recent years. Our classrooms are up-to-date learning environments and we offer a wide range of subjects including all the Sciences, Mathematics, Social Sciences, English, Technology, Physical Education and Creative and Visual Arts.
Our school strengths are Outdoor Education and subjects in the Creative and Visual Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Studies, Photography, Painting and Design). Upper Hutt College also offers a variety of activities outside of the classroom for students. We have an excellent reputation for student participation in sports especially Basketball, Football, Futsal and Dance. There are over 20 different sporting codes available for students to join.

Students have many opportunities to be involved in outdoor education trips at Upper Hutt College.
The Year 12 Adventure (Outdoor) Education course comprises of key themes: Bush, Rock, Mountain. Students will participate in activities including Navigation, Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Adventure based learning, Rafting and High Ropes. Students considering this course should be prepared to engage in theoretical concepts in the classroom that will allow them to increase their ability to pursue adventure in the outdoors.
The Year 13 course builds on the knowledge and skills learnt in Year 12 Adventure Education. Course content includes, kayaking, bush survival skills, river crossing, adventure based learning, tramping, rock climbing and abseiling.
International students also have the option of joining Geography field trips to places such as Tongariro National Park or Rotorua.
During the year and in November during the End of Year Programme for those international students not doing the national NCEA exams students also get the opportunity to go on day trips to such places as Castlepoint Beach, Matiu/Somes Island, Butterfly Creek, walkways above Wellington Harbour, Pukaha Mt Bruce, the Pinnacles in the Wairarapa and to the Kapiti Coast.
Upper Hutt College offers the NCEA (National Certificate in Educational Achievement) qualification at all levels. German students regularly stay in order to gain University Entrance in New Zealand in order to enter universities back in Germany. A wide range of subjects are available which include Dance, Music, Media Studies, Photography and Art as well as more traditional academic subjects. The school is also strong in a variety of Physical Education Courses including Physical Education itself, Sports Performance and Community Sports Leadership.
The school and local clubs offer up to 30 sports and numerous cultural activities for the students to participate in. Sports include fencing, horse riding, athletics, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, roller skating, touch rugby, volleyball, as well as dance groups, drama productions and music groups. Individual music tuition is available.
