Dunstan High School

Dunstan High School is a decile 9, co-educational school with around 500 students. It is an excellent school for students who enjoy the outdoors and want a unique New Zealand experience. The school offers both boarding and homestay and is situated in the safe and friendly town of Alexandra, only 1.5 hours drive from Queenstown International Airport.

We are proud of our school and have a strong academic programme in place, offering a full range of academic subjects from Year 9 to Year 13.

We also provide students with an excellent opportunity to excel in other areas including drama, music, art and outdoor education. Close to lakes, rivers and mountains we consider ourselves very lucky to be located in the scenic Southern Lakes Region of the South Island; surrounded by an amazing and beautiful natural environment.

Dunstan High School offers an award winning Outdoor Education Programme which includes skiing/ snowboarding, rock-climbing, challenge ropes course, hiking, search and rescue and kayaking. Our programmes specialise in personal and social development, teamwork, leadership and relating to others. These are all very desirable employment skills. Adventure becomes the medium for students to explore their strengths and realise what they are capable of. This is operated from our Outdoor Education Centre at the edge of Mt Aspiring National Park, Wanaka as well as our local area around Alexandra.

Each year 15 – 20 International Students from a range of different countries choose to study at Dunstan High School. We believe that by sharing our language and culture we gain a wider world-view and greater tolerance and understanding of different points of view.

Dunstan High School is an excellent school for students who enjoy outdoor activities but who also want to do well academically. It is also set in a spectacular part the country and is excellent for those students who just want a very unique New Zealand experience.

Outdoor Education

Dunstan High School offers an award winning Outdoor Education Programme/Adventure based Learning Programme that includes skiing/ snowboarding, rock-climbing, challenge ropes course, hiking and kayaking. This is one of our general subjects and is often a highlight for International Students. These programmes are regarded bu many adventure specialists as amongst the best in New Zealand with a special focus on personal and social development.

Leadership Training

At Dunstan High School our highly respected unique Adventure Based Leadership Training has been independently researched on three occasions. Each time we have obtained outstanding results in terms of personal and social development, increase in personal confidence and ability to lead and work with others. This programme has an extremely positive reputation in the community and turns out youth leaders of the future. The school and the community provide many opportunities for trained students to contribute their skills.

Sports/Cultural Activities

A world class golf course, international sized swimming pool and ice rink are located next door to the school. We also offer all of the traditional sports and clubs including football/soccer, rugby, cricket, netball, basketball, hockey, badminton, table tennis, chess, choir, drama, photography, debating, squash, ice-skating, tennis, athletics, rowing, equestrian, rock climbing, skiing, mountain biking and cycling. Our kayakers are also amongst the best in the country.

Cultural opportunities

Our Maori heritage is important to us and International Students are welcome to join our Kapahaka group to experience more of Maori culture. Students will also have the opportunity to travel within our region and living with a homestay family or in our boarding hostel provides an excellent opportunity for students to get to know New Zealanders and our way of life.

Dunstan give you the option of staying in a homestay or in a boarding hostel with approximately 50 other student Homestays are selected according to the guidelines set out in the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International students.

Applications are welcomed throughout the year. Annual Tuition Fee: ODENZ standard pricing package from July 2011 until further notice.

Tuition fees include; administration, homestay placement, ID card, locker, school magazine and uniform on loan from the school (students need to bring their own black winter shoes).

They do not include additional curriculum costs, examination fees, personal and recreational costs.

Medical Insurance

May be organized in the home country or by Dunstan High School and varies depending on the length of stay. Dunstan High School usually arranges insurance through Southern Cross Healthcare.
