William Colenso College

William-Colenso-College-01Located in one of New Zealand’s main tourist destinations, William Colenso College enjoys the warm Mediterranean-like climate and coastal attractions that Napier has to offer. Napier is known as the art deco capital of the world, providing its own unique form of the popular 1930s styling with Maori motifs and other original designs.

William Colenso College is a medium-sized co-educational state secondary school that has provided a high quality academic education for students since 1959. Students are encouraged to forge medium and long-term life goals during their time at the school. The school provides students with a safe, supportive environment that fosters good social skills.

The campus is large and attractive, and the school is well equipped to provide students with an education that will give them a sound basis for living and working in the 21st century. The recent development of a technology centre, music/drama suite, student supprt centre, senior catering kitchen and climbing wall provides all students with state of the art learning opportunities.

Outdoor Education Programme

Outdoor Education is one of the many strengths of William Colenso College. The school employs highly qualified instructors and one recently was the national president of Education Outdoors New Zealand (EONZ), an organisation for outdoor educationalists.

William Colenso College proudly was one of the first schools in New Zealand to be awarded the OutdoorsMark - the new national standard for providers of outdoor education.

In 2007 William Colenso Collge was awarded the trophy for the best Outdoor Education programme in New Zealand.

Outdoor education is available as a full subject to Year 11, 12 and 13 students at William Colenso College. The classes are multi-level — therefore students are able to work across modules to fill gaps in previous assessments.

Outdoor recreation unit standards are obtained through this course and contribute to a formal qualification, the National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation. The qualification is aimed at recognising leadership skills that the student will gain through the courses. Students develop sufficient skills and knowledge to enter second year tertiary courses in outdoor recreation.

Academic Programme

William Colenso College offers a wide range of courses at all levels. International students are accepted from Year 11 to Year 13 (15 to 18 years old).
