Mount Hutt College

Mount Hutt College Methven is nestled at the base of one of the South Island’s biggest and best winter playgrounds, offering its students a comprehensive educational experience amidst the majestic beauty of the Southern Alps.

This co-educational high school is the ideal choice for those students wanting to study in an active and fun environment that offers world-class skiing and snowboarding at their doorstep, as well as a range of other recreational activites such as water sports, golf and tramping.

Outdoor Programme

Mount Hutt College Methven is situated in the heart of a region full of outdoor recreational activities, from skiing and snowboarding to water sports, tramping and mountain biking. The school also Provides:

Ski-ing or snowboarding activity in Term 3

  • Available in winter (term three), this provides students with the opportunity to learn to ski/snowboard or enhance their existing skills at Mount Hutt skifield
  • Students are involved at a level appropriate to their skills and experience
  • They are given a unique opportunity to ski at arguably the best skifield in the Southern Hemisphere, due to its light dry powder, long season and reliable snow coverage.
  • Students have excellent access to the skifield during weekends
  • The College enters teams in inter-secondary competitions

Outdoor opportunities

Students can become involved in a variety of outdoor education activities including water sports such as kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, golf and tramping. The college and community offers a wide range of sports.

Senior physical education classes at Mount Hutt College Methven offer a variety of sports and recreation activities during the year, while field trips through biology and geography courses also offer a chance for students to experience the environment.

Outdoor Education

The school’s outdoor education subject available to students includes:

  • Kayaking - leading to a white water weekend
  • Tramping and camping
  • Mountain biking
  • Rock climbing
  • Skiing and/or snowboarding
  • Mountain Craft/Snow caving
  • Outdoor first Aid

Academic Programme

Junior students (years 7 to 10) at Mount Hutt College Methven study a common course for the full year, while senior students (years 11 to 13) prepare for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement, levels 1 to 3.

A wide range of subjects are available at all levels at Mount Hutt College Methven, from English to mathematics to the sciences, accounting and economics, art, music, graphics, food and nutrition, geography, history and technology.

International students can take an ESOL (English for speakers of Other Languages) programme at the level appropriate for their learning. In ESOL classes, students can improve their English and prepare for exams in English competency. They can also receive support for their learning in other subjects, and learn about New Zealand life and culture.

Fees & Accomodation

International students live with caring families in the Methven region, and homestays on farms can be requested. Mount Hutt College Methven arranges and supervises homestay accommodation.

Fees include:

  • Tuition fees: 2009 ODENZ fees - one term NZ$4,600, two terms NZ$6,900, three terms NZ$9,200, four terms NZ$11,500
  • Homestay accommodation fees: NZ$190 per week
  • Homestay placement and orientation fee NZ$400 - includes airport pick up on arrival
  • Outdoor Education as a subject NZ$600 per half year/two terms
