Over the last 5 years, Gore High School has developed its Outdoor Education courses and provides a wide range of options for students. All of these courses use Achievement standards which can be used by students to gain credits. Students can choose either the Physical Education or Adventure programs for the year level they are completing at school.

Year 12 Physical Education

This course is academically intensive but highly practical and adventurous. It covers practical areas such as ice skating, kayaking, cross country skiing as well as training methods, fitness and leadership. Leadership sees the students taking part in the Kiwi Leadership Programme in a Primary/Intermediate school and possibly as leaders on the Year 10 camp to Borland Lodge.

Year 12 Adventure Program Experience

This course is very practical with the class work building up to a camp away from school each term. The camps are.

  • Raft camp
  • Tramping
  • Alpine camp
  • Rock Camp

The raft camp is for two days and is on the Clutha River(Mata Au) which is two hours north of Gore. Students will build their own rafts and use them to navigate the river each day. This is the most popular camp with students and provides a unique way to see some of New Zealand

Tramping is on the Kepler track which is considered one of the top eight walks in New Zealand. Views of Te Anau and the lakes from Mt Luxmore are spectacular and well worth the walk.

Alpine camp is based at the Remarkables Ski field. Students build a snow cave on the first day which will be their home for the next two nights. They are taught a range of skills such as cutting snow steps and traveling over steep terrain.

The final camp is based in Wanaka, one of New Zealand's premium rock climbing areas. The fine weather and views of the lake and surrounding mountains make for a great finish to the year.

This course also includes a number of Environmental units of work which are related to the trips that we do.
Year 12 Physical Education

This programme is designed to prepare students for further education in the field of Physical Education, Sports Science and/or Recreation or any career where knowledge of anatomy and movement is required. The students will plan, participate in and evaluate an Outdoor Experience of their own choosing. They will take part in a physical activity and design a programme to improve their ability. Assessment of their ability and their programme also takes place. Those students that wish to can personalise their learning by taking First Aid and Life Saving Unit Standards. This will equip the students to work in any New Zealand Swimming Pool. All the students also plan and run the school's Swimming Sports event.

Year 13 Adventure Program Skills.

This program builds on the skills and knowledge from the Adventure Program Experience course (it is not compulsory to have done the year 12 course). This course follows the same themes but the activities vary. The practical camps are

  • Sea Kayaking
  • Survival
  • Alpine camp
  • Rock Camp

For the first camp, students spend three days sea kayaking on Lake Manapouri. This lake is located in a world heritage area. The sea kayaks offer an amazing opportunity for students to explore this part of New Zealand.

In term two the students complete three overnight camps where they have to build their own shelters, set traps and light fires. These are a great opportunity to get back to basics and make damper and cook food over an open fire.

The students then join up with the year 12 Adventure Program to go to the Remarkables for Alpine camp. Students spend the two days setting up camp and going on a journey around the Rasterburn Basin. Students are introduced to the skills needed to abseil and move over more difficult terrain.

Term four sees the two groups join up once again to go to Wanaka for rock camp. This time the students are introduced to lead climbing but students can complete the assessment using top roping at higher grades than at level two.

There is a focus on environmental issues throughout the course and students have to plan and implement an environmental action as part of the course.
