Darfield High School is located 40 kilometres west of Christchurch City near the magnificent Southern Alps. Our students and their families enjoy a rural and outdoors lifestyle, being close to numerous skifields (including Mt Hutt), golf courses, rivers, forests and lakes. We are 25 minutes away from Christchurch International Airport which is on the outskirts of Christchurch City so you can have the best of both worlds!
Our region is a prosperous rural area and Darfield High School is a modern, attractive Years 7 to 13 school which caters for 740 students from ages 11 to 18 plus.
Our Outdoor Education programme offers a wide range of choices to students. These include Outdoor Leadership, Rock Climbing, Kayaking, Adventure-based Learning, Tramping and Mountaineering, Skiing and Snowboarding, Equestrian and Golf. Darfield High School opened its professional Rock Climbing Wall in June 2007. Our Outdoor Education programme is supported by the International Department which offers day and overnight trips to Christchurch and around the South Island. Some of these trips/activities include jetboating, quad biking, Harley Davidson rides, Scuba Dive, Archery, Swimming with Dolphins, Whale-watching and Horse Riding/Trekking.
Darfield High School students play a wide range of sports, including netball, tennis, cricket, hockey, rugby, football, claybird shooting and basketball, as well as athletics, swimming, cross country and road racing. Skiing and snowboarding are weekly sports during the winter. MotoX is also popular at school and in the local area.
Curriculum subjects include French, English, the Arts and Music, Sciences, Physical Education, Mathematics, Economics, ICT, Te Reo Maori and Japanese. Darfield High School also has a Rural College for students wishing to pursue an agricultural/farming based career. The school has audiovisual facilities for distance learning.
All international students live with carefully selected local families. We have families in Darfield itself as well as in the wider area so students may choose a farm-based and/or lifestyle homestay, or live within the township.
We strive to make sure our Outdoor Education students have the best possible experience while they are with us.
