Outdoor Education at Horowhenua College

Horowhenua College is situated in the rural township of Levin, The College is named after the lake on the western border of the town and it is nestled on productive farm land against the backdrop of native bush covered Tararua Ranges. Levin is fifteen minutes from west coast beaches, fifteen minutes from the Tararua Ranges, 70 minutes from the capital city Wellington, and forty minutes from Palmerston North city.

Horowhenua College is a co-educational state school with expansive grounds. The main building surrounds a rose garden quadrangle. Facilities include: two gymnasiums, climbing wall, weights room, and an outdoor swimming pool, performing arts complex and recording studio. Language studies include: Spanish, Maori, Japanese, Conversational French, and Latin if required (extra costs for distance learning and tutoring).

A friendly caring environment welcomes international students. The College motto “Essayez”, i.e. try your best, encourages students to participate. The Outdoor Education programme works on a “challenge by choice” policy.

Students can participate in a wide range of sporting and cultural activities through the College and in local community groups. Eg Aquatic Centre, artificial hockey turf, and golf course. Canoe polo is one of the College’s strengths.

The Outdoor Education programme includes: rope work, kayaking, mountain biking, bushcraft, orienteering and navigation.

 

Whenever possible we encourage interested students to contact current or recently returned international students to ask them directly their experience of life at Horowhenua as an international student.

Fees and accommodation:
Most international students live in homestays which are selected according to the guidelines set out in the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International students.

Applications are welcomed throughout the year.

Tuition fees.

One term $4,600
Two terms $6,900
Three terms $9,200
Four Terms $11,500

Tuition fees include: administration, homestay placement, ID card, locker, school magazine and uniform if necessary (students need to bring their own black winter shoes).

They do not include additional curriculum costs, examination fees, personal and recreational costs.

Art Fees:  Junior $45, Senior  $95.  

Photography:  $60.  Students must have their own good quality digital camera.  Printing extra.

Creative Catering:  $100 Annual fee, $60 Workbooks (2).

Outdoor Education Fees: $500 per annum (Optional ski trip $250)

Homestay fees: $180 per week.  $200 from 2010.
Insurance: May be organized in the home country or by Horowhenua College and varies depending on the length of stay.
