Outdoor Education – a history of excellence and innovation. Dunstan High School is situated in the heart of stunning Central Otago. The exceptional lakes rivers and mountains of the South Island dominate our landscape – and this perhaps explains why Dunstan High School has always been a leader in Outdoor Education. In 1985 Dunstan High School pioneered the idea of the “outdoor school’ with the introduction of cross-curricular outdoor education beginning in yr 10 and full time outdoor education courses available to students from yr 11-13. These courses are now so popular that one third of all senior students are enrolled in one of our six full-time outdoor education courses. Our nationally recognised leadership training programme includes outdoor education camps and is available to all students at year 10,12 and 13. Dunstan High School continues to innovate in the way our outdoors can be used for education - offering programmes to corporate groups, overseas visitors and community groups.
In 2005 Dunstan was the winner of the Outdoors New Zealand Excellence Award for “Best Outdoor Education Programme” and was one of the first schools in New Zealand to be awarded the Outdoorsmark for its safety management programme.
Facilities Dunstan High is one of only a few schools in New Zealand that has its own Outdoor Education Centre. Located in the stunningly beautiful Mt Aspiring National Park, our Tititea Wilderness Lodge is a big part of what makes Outdoor Education at Dunstan so special. Its beautiful alpine setting amongst the native bush and mountain streams makes it a place that never leaves the memories of any student at Dunstan High School. Back on the school site in Alexandra, Dunstan boasts an extensive High Challenge Ropes course along with access to climbing, kayaking and aquatics sites in walking distance from the school. Our snow sports programme is based around nearby ski areas in the Cardrona Valley and in Queenstown.
The School Dunstan High School is a co-educational state secondary school of 570 students in years 9-13. We offer a full range of core subjects to year thirteen and our academic results compare favourably with other similar schools. Dunstan is also exceptionally proud of its nationally recognised strength in the Performing Arts and our new performing Arts Suite. Wide sporting and cultural opportunities exist in co-curricular activities including kayaking, mountain biking and skiing. Dunstan has a small and diverse range of international students in the school.
Boarding and Accommodation. The school runs a well-established and fully modernised boarding hostel. It is one of only a few co-educational boarding schools in New Zealand and the small size of the boarding hostel (50 students) make it a unique, attractive and a very positive opportunity for international students. Homestay accommodation is also available for international students at DHS.
